Celebrating the Holy Week of Easter in Israel is a dream come true for many Christians and many thousands visit every year in order to follow the footsteps of Jesus in his last moments.

Easter will be celebrated on Sunday April 12.

Here are the main events through the week:

Palm Sunday

This year, the Christian Holy Week celebrations start on April 5 with Palm Sunday.

On Palm Sunday thousands of Christian pilgrims climb to Mount of Olives to re-enact Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem. The procession will go through the Via Dolorosa and will end up at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

Between Palm Sunday and Good Friday, you can join a daily mass in the holy sites of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, and the Garden of Gethsemane church.

Good Friday in Jerusalem

Good Friday marks Jesus’ journey up to Golgotha to be crucified.

The streets and alleys of the Old City in Jerusalem will be packed with pilgrims, so get there early if you want to witness one of the most amazing sights in religion, with thousands of pilgrims following Jesus’ same path down the Via Dolorosa.

Holy Saturday

The next day is Holy Saturday and thousands of Christian pilgrims gather in the Old City of Jerusalem at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher.

Here you can witness the annual miracle of the Holy Fire.

If you do come and visit during Easter, just be aware that most sites in Jerusalem will be very crowded.
